how much are you expecting to get paid?

I think it was yesterday's The Star newspaper. I read a short article on a book which the author addresses tips on answering tough interview questions. Let's see if I remember the 2 tips correctly, it goes something like this;

Q: So how much are you expecting to get paid?
A: Hm... a little less that Bill Gates will do.

Well, of course, you will have to phrase it and use an appropriate tone while answering the question. Wait for your interviewer to laugh… well I hope they do if not you’ll have to say something to cover up.

Q: Are you single\attached?
A: Well if I get this job I would be married to it!... may I know what this question have relation to this job I'm applying for?

Professionally, interviewers should not ask this kind of personal questions. In the matter of fact, all questions you think that are not related to the job or company should not be asked at all! If you don't feel comfortable answering, don't.

If you are wondering why the question is asked at all.. well some bosses prefer to hire single employees so that they would be more committed to their work. Or less issues when they have to travel or get transferred. No family, husband\wife or girlfriends\boyfriends means fewer issues … something like that.

I personally think the author's suggestion for the two questions above are quite good. But... here's what I think.

I have not gone for much job interviews but what is #1 that one should have is confidence. Walk straight, sit straight, firm handshake (only if your interview reach his\her hands out first), speak clearly and make eye contact. Being able to look straight in the eye of your interviewer is one thing any interviewee should do during any interview.

Honesty is the best policy. What you say and how you project yourself is what you would have to do the whole time you are hire in the company if you get the job. Don't act like someone you are not. Being superficial\fake is stressful on yourself in the long run.

How should I answer my questions? Well, prepare yourself before the interview. List all the standard\predictable questions and go through your points a day before your interview. Be like The Sims and practice it in front of the mirror if you have to. And for the being funny part... I think it really depends on the setting of the interview and the type of job you are applying for. I seriously don't think you should be answering as the author suggested when you are apply for serious and 'big' positions. However, I would try out those answers if I was applying for a job in the entertainment and sales line.

If it is a Sdn Bhd company, go to ROC and check out its accounts over the last few years. Make notes. Then at the interview, when the interview asks, "Now is there anything you like to know about this company?" (and he expects you to say No thank you), you sit up and say: "Yes, I do. Two years ago the company made RM20mil but last year, lost RM5mil. Since I'm thinking of investing my career on this company, I want to know why." Guaranteed you'll get the job.

I always believe an interview is on both side. While the interviewer are reviewing and testing you, you are also reviewing and testing them. Some interviewers don't realised that they are actually representing the company and projecting the company's image. And I hv seen some really teruk interviewers.
