He should be jailed

I think that National Service dodger Ahmad Hafizal should be jailed.

I understand he is a good son. He quit school to help raise the family. I really respect and look highly on him. But, he was given a responsibility like all other students, so he must he responsible for his actions.

If I was in his shoes, I wouldn't attend the 3 month National Service either. I mean 3 whole months is a lot of time. One can earn quite a sum in 3 months to feed the family. But he why didn't he notify the people in charge? Why didn't he let officials know that he is not capable to carry out his responsibility? There are many cases where NS officials have let students make a deferment and skip NS, all with valid reasons.

Ahmad wouldn't be fined\jailed if he did that.

The newspapers are only kind of getting on the "good" side of Ahmad. But seriously..... I think he should be jailed for a while for his actions. "Saya malas nak pergi". Why is everyone making a big fuss over it? Is it because he is such a good boy for being the breadwinner of the family? I believe there are many worst cases like this, and at least these other students took on the responsibility to inform the officials of their problems.

Who is speaking for these students? The menteri besar? Where do these other poor but responsible students stand?

I really pity the other parties that are bombarded because of this issue, the police, the NS officials. I think they are in the right to do what they did. And I respect the judge what was judging Ahmad's case too.

I don't have compassion? Yeah maybe. I'm a cold hearted witch after all. I'm realistic. I'm not a fake pretender.

So this is what happened...

He might not have had the time, money, or even CHANCE to notify the NS people about him not being able to go.

And what if he did notify, but they refused his deferment? When NS started, there was news about a few young parents (married, with babies and toddlers) who were forced to enlist for NS even though they had families to take care of. They were not granted deferments.

Jail time is simply TOO MUCH. He is not a CRIMINAL. He is just someone bogged down by circumstances.

At least give him community service or other such things if they want to punish him; that would at least benefit the rest of the community.

What sort of benefit does jailing bring him, except stress, mistrust, and the usage of taxpayers' money?

So many other people are let off free for murder, rape, abuse, and other malicious crimes. What crime did this boy really do?

I agree with Tiara - with all the bureaucracy involved, one wonders how he'd be able to forward his appeal to defer or postpone going to NS.

At the end of the day, it points to the futility of NS...

The govt is already considering cutting their prison budget to trim the huge deficit - this points out at the idiocy of having NS (costing more than RM 500 million a year) and then jailing those who do not go.

What you've just said, you're being an oxymoron itself. If you chose to not attend NS, just like what the guy did, so shouldn't you be jailed as well? Just a thought..

Kasihan awak nie!

Definitely someone who needs to learn more.

Bottom-line is the jailing is a selective prosecution!

NS is in itself flawed. How I wished I am a lawyer. I'll sue the government for malice as well as I'll make sure the NS scheme will go down the drain as well.

Nasihat saya untuk anda, belajarlah lagi.

All: With this post I'm already expecting a lot of comments that will have a different idea from mine. Thanks for your insightful comments, here's what i think.

Tiara: He did have time to report himself. The newspaper quoted him saying "Saya malas nak pergi". Yes, I do agree that community service would be better. But if he was to carry out the punishment, hopefully he wont say "Saya malas nak pergi".

Nazmi: Like I told Tiara he said he was too lazy to report his problems. He had a choice. The police did only arrest him with very valid reasons.

cyber-red: Yes you are right. But I would have reported my problems to the official and get something done.

mamat: I personally think NS is not all that bad. It's all again personal perception. Yes, I do have to learn more, after all I’m young in this society and have not even gotten a glimpse of the 'real world'. But what I am doing is learning from all this everyday with my OWN analysis and thinking. People, you example, might disagree with me, but I thank you for that because you are someone who I can learn from.

Well i personally will have tons of concern and worries. If i chose to deny it don't put me in jail please
